Hitch-Mounted Grill Guide for 4WD Camp Cooking in Australia

Published 17 October 2026 Camp Kitchen Research-based guide
The quick answer

The HitchFire Forge 15 is a two-burner propane grill for a 2 inch hitch, and HitchFire ships it to the US and Canada only. Not sold in Australia yet. No AUD price yet. For an Australian 4WD, check the Weber Baby Q Midnight Black (Q1000N) first, about A$389 at BCF, and only add a hitch tray once you have measured the fit.

A hitch-mounted grill sits on the tow receiver and swings aside so the tailgate can still open. The model people ask about is the HitchFire Forge 15, a two-burner propane grill from a US maker. HitchFire’s FAQ says it ships to the US and Canada only, and does not ship directly anywhere else.

Not sold in Australia yet. No AUD price yet.

What you can buy here is a 50 mm hitch mount or a drawbar tray, plus a portable LPG barbecue with a Type 27 connection, or a slide-out kitchen in a wagon or ute. Figures below come from HitchFire’s product page and FAQ, and from BCF listings checked in October 2026.

Check the hitch and the gas before you import anything. HitchFire specifies a standard 2 inch receiver, which is 50.8 mm. Most Australian 4WD receivers are 50 mm square, the size BBQARM states for its Hayman Reese style mount. The Forge 15 is built for US propane bottles and tanks, a different fitting from the Type 27 connection on the Weber barbecues below. It may not fit your tow hitch or receiver, and it may not suit Australian LPG fittings or gas regulations. Measure the receiver, check the hitch pin, and ask a licensed gas fitter before you import one.

The picks

HitchFire Forge 15

Not sold in Australia yet. No AUD price yet.

Who it suits: someone who wants a two-burner grill on a swing arm, has measured a true 2 inch receiver, and has checked Australian gas rules before arranging an import.

Key strengths: HitchFire lists 355 square inches of cast iron (about 2,290 square centimetres), two 7,500 BTU burners (15,000 BTU, about 15.8 MJ/h) and room for up to 14 burgers. It uses a standard 2 inch receiver and a dual swing arm that pivots 90 or 180 degrees, with fold-out side tables, a lid, a grease tray and a bottle opener. It lifts off the arm onto integrated legs. The spec list gives a 16 oz (1 lb) propane bottle or a 20 lb tank with an adapter. The same page also lists 1 lb, 5 lb and 20 lb tanks, and a splitter hose when both burners share a tank. The box is the grill, a DIY dual swing arm, side tables, a grease system and mounting hardware, with a 2-year warranty on materials and workmanship. In October 2026 the page showed a purchase price of US$599, and a comparison table listed US$575.

Trade-offs: There is no Australian shop and no AUD price. Canada is supplied through Griddle.ca and Universal Truck Accessories. Other countries are pointed to a freight forwarder, and propane cylinders cannot be exported with the grill. The hitch pin is 16 mm by 2.0 pitch, about 4¼ inches (about 108 mm). A 1¼ inch receiver needs a rated adapter, and the page publishes no weight or outside dimensions to check that rating against. HitchFire says it can stay on the hitch while driving if loose parts are secured and the propane is off. The number plate and lights still have to show, and that hitch cannot be towing at the same time. Warranty contact is the US maker.

BBQARM Vehicle Tow-Hitch Mount

Who it suits: 4WD, ute and SUV owners with a 50 mm Hayman Reese style receiver who want cooking off the back of the vehicle, and who already have a BBQARM arm and tray or will buy them separately.

Key strengths: BCF lists galvanised steel, a textured black powder-coat, a two-piece anti-rattle fit, and quick removal. It suits 50 mm Hayman Reese style receivers and, on BCF’s listing, takes BBQARM arms, trays and Starlink RV poles. It was A$129.99 at BCF in October 2026. That 50 mm figure is the one to set beside HitchFire’s 2 inch (50.8 mm) shank.

Trade-offs: The mount has no grill and no tray. BCF was not listing a single vehicle bundle of mount, arm and tray. There is no published weight rating or hitch-pin size, so check both against the vehicle and the arm.

BBQARM Caravan/Trailer Kit

Who it suits: caravan and camper-trailer owners who want a swing-out shelf on the drawbar for a portable barbecue.

Key strengths: BCF includes a drawbar mount, arm and tray, fitted without drilling or welding, for most caravan and trailer drawbars. The tray is 560 x 360 mm, and BCF says it fits a Weber Baby Q and a Q2000. Aluminium was A$299.99 and black was A$335.99 at BCF in October 2026. If you already have the arm, the Universal Drawbar Mount was A$99.99, a 175 mm powder-coated 5 mm steel clamp for 50 mm and 2 inch drawbars.

Trade-offs: This clamps to a trailer drawbar, and BCF does not say its arm bolts to the vehicle hitch mount. The current Baby Q is 66 cm wide and 46 cm deep with the lid closed, and the Q2000N is 125 cm wide with tables out, so both overhang a 560 x 360 mm tray. BCF lists no weight limit for the arm.

Weber Baby Q Midnight Black (Q1000N)

Who it suits: couples and small families who want a compact barbecue on Australian LPG, used on a table, a tailgate, or a tray that actually carries the body.

Key strengths: BCF lists one stainless burner at 10.6 MJ/h (10,000 BTU), a porcelain-enamelled cast-iron grate, 1,290 square centimetres (46 x 36 cm) and up to 9 burgers. Closed, with no side tables, it is 38 x 66 x 46 cm and 9.1 kg. It has a high-domed lid, front control, front grease tray, piezo ignition and a 315°C maximum, on a Type 27 LPG connection. BCF does not list a gas cylinder among the features. Warranty is 5 years. Midnight Black was A$389 at BCF in October 2026.

Trade-offs: One burner is one heat zone, and there are no side tables. At 66 x 46 cm the body is larger than the 560 x 360 mm BBQARM tray, so check where the feet land. You carry it to the cook site. It has no hitch arm of its own.

Weber Q Midnight Black (Q2000N)

Who it suits: families who want a bigger portable LPG grill, with room for plates, and a table or tray wide enough once the side tables come off.

Key strengths: BCF lists one burner at 14.8 MJ/h (14,000 BTU), close to the Forge 15’s converted 15.8 MJ/h, with 2,064 square centimetres (57 x 41 cm), up to 12 burgers, two side tables, four tool hooks, a high lid, piezo ignition, a front grease tray and a 315°C maximum. The grate is porcelain-enamelled cast iron on a Type 27 LPG connection. It weighs 14.5 kg, and with the lid open and tables out it is 73 x 125 x 61 cm. Warranty is 5 years. Midnight Black was A$539 at BCF in October 2026.

Trade-offs: With the tables out it is 125 cm wide, so measure the body with them removed before it goes on a 560 mm tray. A solid table or tailgate is a safer seat than an unrated swing arm. It is still one heat zone.

XTM 4WD Camp Kitchen with Sink

Who it suits: wagon and ute owners who want the kitchen in the cargo area, with a bench for a two-burner stove, a sink, and a slide for the fridge.

Key strengths: BCF lists steel and aluminium with a black powder-coated finish, for most 4x4 wagons and utes. Three sections lock independently, with a windshield, cutlery drawer and collapsible sink. Legs run from 65 to 110 cm. The top fits most two-burner stoves. Loads are 60 kg on the fridge slide and 30 kg on each of the stove and prep sections. Closed it is 90 x 53.7 x 21.5 cm, it slides to 250 cm, and it weighs 37.5 kg, with a 12-month warranty. In October 2026 BCF listed A$599, or A$549 as the club price.

Trade-offs: Stove and fridge are extra. The 250 cm slide needs level ground behind the vehicle, and the cargo floor has to take the closed size. The hitch stays free for a trailer. Measure the vehicle, because “most wagons and utes” is not a fitment list.

XTM X-Lite Camp Kitchen

Who it suits: people who want a slide-out fridge tray and stove bench at a much lower price than the sink kitchen, and who will recheck that price before they buy.

Key strengths: BCF lists a fridge opening of 846 x 529 x 34 mm, including Engel’s MT-V60 and 80 range, and a stove top for most two-burner stoves with a removable windshield. Closed size is 891 x 576 x 122 mm. Loads are 80 kg on the slide and 40 kg on the stove top, at 32 kg overall, with lockable compartments and a 12-month warranty. BCF showed A$120 in October 2026, with a Now label and no higher price beside it.

Trade-offs: No sink and no stove are included. The description says aluminium with a powder-coated frame, and the spec table says powder-coated steel. The Now label means A$120 may be a promotion. Measure it against the cargo floor. The hitch stays free.

How to choose

Measure the receiver. A 50 mm Australian receiver and a 2 inch (50.8 mm) shank can jam or refuse to enter. HitchFire’s fitment picker uses US vehicles, so measure an Australian 4WD yourself. BBQARM’s mount is listed for 50 mm Hayman Reese style. A 1¼ inch receiver, on HitchFire’s FAQ, needs an adapter rated for the grill, and the Forge 15 page still gives no weight for that check.

Sort the gas first. The Webers use a Type 27 LPG connection. The Forge 15 specifies US propane bottles, or 5 lb and 20 lb tanks with HitchFire’s hose. Ask a licensed gas fitter, and read your state rules, before an imported appliance goes on an Australian cylinder. Propane cylinders cannot be exported with the grill.

Choose where dinner happens. A hitch arm keeps the cook outside the cargo area. A drawbar kit does that on a caravan or camper trailer. An XTM slide leaves the hitch free for towing and sits beside the fridge, and it spends cargo room plus the cost of a stove. Towing means the vehicle hitch is already occupied.

Put the tray and the barbecue on a tape. BCF pairs a 560 x 360 mm tray with a Baby Q and a Q2000. The Q1000N body is 660 x 460 mm closed, and the Q2000N is 1,250 mm wide with tables out, so plan on overhang and look at the feet. BCF publishes no arm load rating. The grills are 9.1 kg and 14.5 kg before the bottle and the food.

Give the heat some air. Keep the grill clear of the bumper, spare wheel, jerry cans, awning and canvas, and follow the manual’s clearances. Fire rules change by state and by park, so read the sign. Gear left on the hitch has to leave the number plate and lights visible and meet your state’s rear-overhang rules. Disconnect the gas before you drive, as HitchFire tells Forge 15 owners to do.

Add up the weight. The sink kitchen is 37.5 kg and needs 250 cm behind the car when it is out. The X-Lite is 32 kg and 891 mm long closed. Add the fridge and stove. The Baby Q, at 9.1 kg, is the lighter thing to lift down.

FAQ

Can I buy a HitchFire Forge 15 in Australia?

Not sold in Australia yet. No AUD price yet. HitchFire ships to the US and Canada only. Canada goes through Griddle.ca and Universal Truck Accessories, and other countries are not supplied directly. The October 2026 page showed US$599 to buy, and US$575 in a comparison table.

Will it fit an Australian tow hitch?

It may not. The maker wants a 2 inch (50.8 mm) receiver and a 16 mm by 2.0 hitch pin about 108 mm long. BBQARM builds its mount for the 50 mm receivers common on Australian 4WDs, so measure yours. Weight and outside size are missing from the HitchFire product page.

Can I run it on Australian LPG?

The grill is specified for US propane bottles and tanks. Local Webers in this guide use a Type 27 connection. An adapter, or an appliance without Australian approval, may be unsafe and may not meet local gas regulations. Ask a licensed gas fitter before you import or connect it.

What can I buy here for the same job?

The Baby Q Midnight Black was about A$389 and the Q2000N about A$539, both on Australian LPG. The BBQARM caravan kit was about A$299.99 to A$335.99, and the vehicle mount was A$129.99 with no tray. The XTM sink kitchen was A$599 (A$549 club) and the X-Lite was A$120.

Can I drive with a grill on the hitch?

HitchFire says the Forge 15 can, with the propane disconnected and loose parts secured. The plate and lights have to stay visible, and state overhang rules still apply. A hitch already towing a trailer has no room for a second mount. The Webers and XTM units ride in the vehicle. The BBQARM tray in the caravan kit clamps to the drawbar.

Do the XTM kitchens include a stove?

The stove is separate. BCF says the tops suit most two-burner stoves. The dearer unit adds a sink and a cutlery drawer. The X-Lite has no sink. Add the stove, and the fridge, to the price.
