On the Main Range, the Bogong High Plains or a Tasmanian highland camp, snow or frozen earth under the tent pulls heat out of a sleeping bag all night. This guide is about high ASTM R-value mats for that: packable winter mats for walking in, and one thick mat for snow camping from the car. It leaves three-season hiking mats, and everyday self-inflating camp mattresses, for their own guides. Specs and prices come from retailer listings and maker pages checked in October 2026.

The picks
Sea to Summit Ether Light XR Pro
Who it suits: Walkers and ski tourers who need a winter mat that still fits in a pack.
Key strengths: Snowys and Sea to Summit list an ASTM R-value of 7.4, 10 cm of Air Sprung Cell height, ThermalCore insulation, an XPRESS valve and an Airstream pump sack in the stuff sack. Suggested use on the maker page is winter camping, mountaineering and cold-weather backpacking, with a limited lifetime warranty. Snowys’ page shows A$279.90 to A$339.90. The variant prices below are from that page in October 2026, and the weights and sizes are Sea to Summit’s chart for the same size names.
| Size | Snowys price | In-use weight | Packed weight | Dimensions | Listed fit |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Small | A$279.90 | 525 g | 585 g | 168 x 55 x 10 cm | Up to 168 cm |
| Regular | A$279.90 | 560 g | 620 g | 183 x 55 x 10 cm | Up to 183 cm |
| Large | A$299.90 | 720 g | 780 g | 198 x 64 x 10 cm | Up to 198 cm |
| Regular Rectangular Wide | A$319.90 | 720 g | 780 g | 183 x 64 x 10 cm | Up to 183 cm |
| Large Rectangular | A$339.90 | 790 g | 850 g | 198 x 64 x 10 cm | Up to 198 cm |
Snowys’ own spec block shows the Small figures (168 x 55 cm, 525 g in use, 585 g packed, packed size 21 x 12 x 12 cm). Use the size name on the price, not that single block, when you compare.
Trade-offs: A figure of about 726 g does not appear on the Snowys listing or the Sea to Summit chart. Large is 720 g and Large Rectangular is 790 g. It is an air mat, so take the repair kit. Sea to Summit says a closed-cell foam mat should still be used as a backup in critical cold. The Ether Light XR without “Pro” is a different mat: Snowys lists it at ASTM R 4.1.
Therm-a-Rest NeoAir XTherm NXT
Who it suits: Winter walkers who want a high R-value in a smaller packed mat, and who will accept a 51 cm Regular if they want the lightest size.
Key strengths: Snowys lists ASTM F3340-18 R 7.3, 7.6 cm thickness, Triangular Core Matrix construction, ThermaCapture insulation, a 30D top, a 70D base, a WingLock valve, and a pump sack, stuff sack and repair kit. That spec block matches Therm-a-Rest’s Regular: 440 g, 183 x 51 cm, packed about 23 x 11 cm. Large on the maker chart is 570 g and 196 x 64 cm, at the same R-value. Snowys listed Neptune Regular at A$459.00 and Neptune Large at A$539.90 in October 2026, and both showed stock. Amazon AU also had a Large at A$390.08, in stock via Amazon Global Store from Germany. That listing warns imports can differ, including warranty, so read the seller notes before treating it as the same offer.
Trade-offs: Regular is 51 cm wide, which is narrow for side sleepers. Therm-a-Rest also lists a Regular Wide at 540 g and 183 x 64 cm. Snowys’ variant data showed Regular and Large only. The previous XTherm, listed by Snowys at R 6.9, is a different mat, and that page says they can no longer get stock.

NEMO Tensor Extreme Conditions
Who it suits: People who want the highest published R-value among the in-stock air mats priced in this guide, especially taller sleepers who want a long, wide rectangle.
Key strengths: Amazon AU listed the Long Wide (193 x 63.5 x 8.9 cm) at A$449.00, in stock, in October 2026. The seller was JJS Corporation. The listing and NEMO both state R 8.5, from four Thermal Mirror layers in an Apex baffle. NEMO lists 3.5 inches of thickness, a 20D top, a 40D bottom, a Laylow valve and a Vortex pump sack. The Long Wide chart gives a minimum weight of 662 g and a packed weight of 746 g.
Trade-offs: Only this size was confirmed at A$449.00. NEMO also charts a Regular Mummy at 472 g, a Regular rectangle at 505 g and a Regular Wide at 625 g, all at R 8.5. Those were not confirmed at Snowys, BCF, Anaconda or at this Amazon price. Check the seller on the day.
Exped MegaMat LXW
Who it suits: People driving to a snow camp, a resort site or a short walk from the car, who want insulation and width more than a small packed size.
Key strengths: Snowys listed it at A$469.95 in October 2026, with stock on the page. Specs are ASTM R 8.1, 10 cm thick, 197 x 77 cm, 2.60 kg, packed 79 x 25 x 25 cm. It is self-inflating foam with a top-up pump. The 77 cm width is the point in a swag, roof tent or winter tent.
Trade-offs: At 2.60 kg and a 79 cm packed length it is not a walking mat. It is here for the R-value on a vehicle-based snow camp, not as a self-inflating mattress roundup. The MegaMat Max LXW lists ASTM R 10.6, 15 cm and 3.355 kg. Snowys showed A$569.95, and that page was out of stock with a notify-me option.

Exped Ultra 6.5R
Who it suits: Fast-and-light alpine walkers who want Exped’s current synthetic four-season mat, once an Australian shop actually lists it.
Not sold in Australia yet. No AUD price yet.
Key strengths: Exped lists ASTM R 6.9, SynmatPlus insulation (synthetic microfibre plus reflective foil), 9 cm thickness, a Schnozzel pump bag and a five-year warranty. Rectangular sizes are M (440 g, 183 x 52 cm), MW (545 g, 183 x 65 cm) and LW (590 g, 197 x 65 cm). Exped calls this their minimum for four-season use, and says ISO-rated bags are tested on a 7R mat, so they recommend at least R 6.5 under the bag. A mummy cut is a separate model. Backpacker’s October 2026 roundup named it favourite overall. GearJunkie and Adventure Alan have also written about it. The numbers here are Exped’s.
Trade-offs: Snowys, BCF, Anaconda and Amazon AU searches did not list this model. Snowys does list an older Ultra 7R LW (spec table ASTM R 7.1, 850 g, 197 x 65 x 9 cm, down-filled) and a Dura 8R LW (spec table ASTM R 7.8, 1.336 kg, same footprint, also down). The Dura description says “an R-value of eight” beside that 7.8 table, so use 7.8. Both pages said Snowys could not get any more, and neither showed a selling price.
NEMO Eclipse All-Season
Who it suits: Side sleepers watching overseas reviews of a thick all-season air pad, who can wait to see if it reaches an Australian retailer.
Not sold in Australia yet. No AUD price yet.
Key strengths: NEMO lists R 6.2, 4 inches of cushioning (about 10 cm, and their thickest air pad), two Thermal Mirror layers, Spaceframe baffles, a Laylow valve and a Vortex pump sack. Sizes are Regular, Regular Wide and Long Wide. Backpacker’s October 2026 roundup named it the value pick, and Adventure Alan has a 2026 review. Weight was not in the spec text on NEMO’s page, so it is left out.
Trade-offs: R 6.2 is below the XR Pro, the XTherm NXT and the Tensor Extreme. It did not appear at Snowys, BCF, Anaconda or Amazon AU. The Tensor Extreme is the NEMO mat here with an Australian price.
How to choose
Compare ASTM numbers, then the job. A higher ASTM F3340 figure means more resistance to heat flowing into cold ground. Exped’s R 6.5 note, above, is the practical floor for snow if the bag is ISO-rated. Walking in, choose between the narrow 440 g XTherm NXT Regular, the 10 cm XR Pro, and the R 8.5 Tensor Extreme. From the car, the MegaMat LXW’s width matters more than its weight.
Match width to how you sleep. A 51 cm mat and a 64 cm mat are different beds. Side sleepers, and anyone over about 183 cm, should be on a Large, Wide or Rectangular size. On the XR Pro, Small and Regular were the same Snowys price.
Plan for a puncture and for damp air. Reflective-film air mats lose their insulation if they go flat. The MegaMat’s foam does not. Sea to Summit still wants a closed-cell foam mat as a backup in critical cold. Therm-a-Rest says not to breath-inflate a self-inflating pad in freezing weather, because moisture from your breath can freeze inside it. The air mats here include a pump sack for the same reason.
Keep the bag decision separate. The mat deals with the ground. It does not turn a summer bag into an alpine bag.
FAQ
What R-value is enough for Australian alpine camping?
Exped recommends at least R 6.5 if you want an ISO-rated bag to perform as rated, because they say those bags are tested on a 7R mat. Snow under a tent, or frozen ground in the Australian Alps or Tasmanian highlands, is the case for the mats here. A mat around R 4 is the three-season hiking choice.
Will a high-R mat make mild nights too hot?
Snowys staff, on the Ether Light XR page, said the R-value is a barrier between you and the ground, and that how hot you feel still depends on the bedding. Unzip the bag on a mild night. The mat does not replace that.
Do I still need a foam mat?
For a serious cold night, yes, as a backup. Sea to Summit says a closed-cell foam mat should be used as a just-in-case insulating layer in critical situations. It also keeps the air mat off sharp ground.
Why list the Exped Ultra 6.5R and NEMO Eclipse if I cannot buy them?
Overseas roundups name them, including Backpacker in October 2026. They were not on Snowys, BCF, Anaconda or Amazon AU when this was checked. Not sold in Australia yet. No AUD price yet.
Is the older Therm-a-Rest XTherm the same as the NXT?
No. Snowys lists the older mat at R 6.9 and says they cannot get more. The NXT is R 7.3, and it was the listing with current Snowys prices.
What should I check before I pay?
The size next to the price. On the Ether Light XR Pro, Small and Large Rectangular were A$60 apart at Snowys. On the XTherm NXT, the Amazon AU Large price was an import listing, not the Snowys offer. Confirm stock, and on Amazon AU confirm the seller.
