Best Sand-Free Beach Mats and Campsite Mats in Australia

Published 17 October 2026 Beach and Water Research-based guide
The quick answer

For a mat the retailer calls sand-free, the CGear Sand Free Multimat suits a campsite and the lighter CGear Quicksand Mat suits a day at the beach. The Companion Recycled Ground Mat is an annex floor, and shake-off picnic blankets are a different product.

A beach mat and a campsite floor turn up in the same search, and they are not the same product. Some listings are open weaves that let sand drop through. Some are blankets you shake. Some are annex floors. Prices and specs below are from Snowys, BCF, Anaconda and Amazon AU in October 2026, and a mat is called sand-free here only when that listing says so.

Those shops do sell dedicated sand-free gear. BCF names its CGear mats sand-free. Anaconda sells a Bok Beach Life sand-free blanket, and a Spinifex picnic blanket whose introduction talks about time sand-free at the beach. Amazon AU sells blankets titled sand-free, including WEKAPO. Snowys sells woven mats that let sand fall through, including the Companion Recycled Ground Mat, without sand-free in the name.

Two kinds of mat

Open weave. CGear mats and the Companion annex mat are woven plastic, so sand and dirt are meant to fall through. BCF says sand will not come back up through the Sand Free Multimat, and the CGear listings say grass can breathe underneath.

Shake-off fabric. Bok, Spinifex and the WEKAPO blanket are continuous cloth. Sand sits on top until you shake it, even when the shop writes sand-free or sandproof. A waterproof picnic rug also blocks damp from below, which a mesh mat does not. For shade over either, see the beach shades guide.

The picks

CGear Quicksand Mat 2 x 2 m

BCF lists this for sandy beach days, parks and picnics. Sand and dirt filter through and will not come back up, the page says it keeps things sand-free, and a shake is enough when you pack up. Water beads off a non-absorbent, quick-dry fabric. It is double-sided lemon and blue, 2 x 2 m, 2 kg, with a carry bag and a 12 month warranty. BCF listed it at A$149.

  • Suits: a couple, or a parent with one child, for a day at the beach.
  • Trade-offs: 2 x 2 m fills up once chairs and a cooler land on it. No pegs or D-rings are listed.

CGear Sand Free Multimat

BCF’s campsite and beach mat. The listing says a multi-layer weave lets sand and dirt fall through and not come back up. It is double-sided green and grey, with reinforced edges, D-rings, rip-stop high-density polypropylene, a storage bag, and 90% UV protection so it can also be shade or a wind break. BCF says it was originally built for the Australian Army, that water passes through, and that grass underneath can breathe. Warranty on the size chart is 12 months.

BCF sizes and weights: 1.8 x 2.4 m (2.4 kg), 3.35 x 2.4 m (4.0 kg), 3.05 x 3.05 m (4.5 kg), 4.3 x 2.4 m (4.8 kg), 5.2 x 2.4 m (5.8 kg), 6 x 2.4 m (6.7 kg), 3.6 x 4.6 m (7.6 kg), 7.5 x 2.4 m (8.0 kg). The range was A$179 to A$399. The 1.8 x 2.4 m page was A$179 and the 7.5 x 2.4 m page was A$399. Mid-size BCF prices were not on those pages.

Snowys sells the same sizes as the C-Gear Multimat, without sand-free in the title. It says a dual-layer synthetic lets sand, dirt and spills fall through, with 90% shade protection, peg points every half metre, a carry bag and a one-year warranty. A reply on the page says it is green and grey, pegs are not included, and water should drain through. The 2.4 x 1.8 m spec panel showed 240 x 180 cm, packed 53 x 47 x 5 cm, and 2.28 kg, a little under BCF’s 2.4 kg for 1.8 x 2.4 m.

Snowys prices: 2.4 x 1.8 m A$164.90, 2.4 x 3.35 m A$214.90, 2.4 x 4.3 m A$229, 3.05 x 3.05 m A$239.90, 2.4 x 5.2 m A$249, 2.4 x 6.0 m A$279, 3.6 x 4.6 m A$309.90, 2.4 x 7.5 m A$324.90.

Amazon AU had a separate CGear listing titled sand-free, orange/tan, described as 8 x 8 ft with dimensions of 2.44 x 2.44 m, at A$307.84 from marketplace seller MAYES GLOBAL LLC. That colour is not the green and grey local mat, and the price was higher than several larger Snowys sizes.

  • Suits: an awning floor, or a smaller size taken to the beach as well.
  • Trade-offs: the 7.5 x 2.4 m is 8.0 kg, a boot load rather than a beach bag. Snowys does not call its copy sand-free, pegs are extra, and mesh will not waterproof a swag.

Companion Recycled Ground Mat

Snowys titles this the Companion Recycled Ground Mat and describes it as the Companion Caravan Recycled Ground Mat: an annex, awning or open-area floor. The page mentions beachside setups and outback camps, but every size is an annex size, 2.4 m wide by 4, 5 or 6 m long. It is not a bag you carry to the flags.

Snowys says a recycled weave lets sand and dirt fall through. A feature line says the tight weave blocks sand while letting soft sand fall through. The page does not call it sand-free. It is reversible, with corner eyelets, pegs and a carry bag included, in heavy-duty recycled plastic, and the weave is described as breathable so it limits grass damage. Warranty is one year.

Prices: 2.4 x 4.0 m A$179.99, 2.4 x 5.0 m A$199.99, 2.4 x 6.0 m A$229.99. The spec panel was for 240 x 400 cm: packed 85 x 45 x 13 cm, 4.32 kg. The 5 m and 6 m weights were not on that panel.

  • Suits: a recycled annex or awning floor, including a site on sand.
  • Trade-offs: not labelled sand-free, and the 4 m size packs to 85 cm, so it stays with the vehicle.

Bok Beach Life Sand Free Blanket

Anaconda calls this a sand-free beach blanket. The waffle-weave microfibre is described as designed to repel sand grains. It is reversible, designed in Australia, super absorbent and quick drying, and made using 40 recycled plastic bottles. Features list 160 x 160 cm and a carry bag with a zip pocket. Full price A$89.99, Club price A$59.99.

Sand is meant to shake off this cloth. It does not fall through, as BCF describes for CGear, and the fabric is absorbent, so it holds water.

  • Suits: one or two people who want a light beach blanket to shake off.
  • Trade-offs: 160 x 160 cm is small once two adults lie down, and it is not an annex floor.

Spinifex Picnic Blanket 2 x 3 m

Anaconda’s picnic blanket. The introduction says you can spend time sand-free at the beach. Features say it is sand and grass resistant: shake off sand, grass, dirt or crumbs, and wipe mud with a damp cloth. They do not say sand falls through.

It is 450D Oxford with a waterproof backing, 2 x 3 m, for 4 to 6 people, packed 44 x 42 x 11.5 cm, 1.35 kg, with a 12 month warranty and a Velcro closure. Full price A$59.99, Club price A$39.99.

  • Suits: a family picnic that needs a dry layer on grass or a calm beach.
  • Trade-offs: sand stays on top until you shake it, and the waterproof back can sweat a lawn.

WEKAPO beach blanket

The Amazon AU title calls this sandproof and a sand-free mat. The periwinkle 7 x 7 ft variation was A$59.65, sold by Sun Ninja Oz. Features say ripstop nylon, a shake gets rid of the sand, and water beads off. The title says 6 stakes and 4 corner pockets. Included components also say 6 metal stakes, while one bullet says 5 stakes plus a spare. Size is inconsistent too: the title and a bullet say 7 x 7 ft (210 x 210 cm), and the measurements table says 3.07 x 2.82 m. Check the variation before you buy.

  • Suits: a beach or picnic where you want pockets and stakes, not a camp weave.
  • Trade-offs: solid nylon, not a through-weave, and the page disagrees with itself on size and stake count.

OZtrail EVA Foam Floor Mat

Snowys does not call this sand-free. Four interlocking EVA tiles make a 122 x 122 cm floor, each tile 60 x 60 cm and the pack 1.2 cm thick. Packed size is 63 x 63 x 4.8 cm and weight is 0.85 kg. Snowys says slots let dirt and sand fall through. Replies on the page describe the tiles under a swag and in a camp shower, and say the foam is not a waterproof groundsheet by itself. Price A$33.99, one-year warranty. Extra packs clip on.

  • Suits: a cheap soft floor in a tent, under a swag, or in a camp shower.
  • Trade-offs: one pack is only 122 x 122 cm, and it is foam, not a beach mat.

How to choose

Match the job. A day on the sand: the 2 kg CGear Quicksand, the Bok blanket, or a nylon blanket such as the WEKAPO. A week under an awning: a measured CGear Multimat or the Companion. A soft floor inside the tent: OZtrail tiles, and a second pack if you need more than 122 x 122 cm.

Size, pegs and wind. Snowys says no single C-Gear fits every awning. The Companion is only 2.4 m wide, which matches the narrow CGear sizes. The 3.05 x 3.05 m CGear is the square living-area size. The Companion includes pegs. Snowys says the C-Gear does not, and BCF lists D-rings so you can add some. On a beach, long sand pegs beat short wire pegs, and a corner-pocket blanket needs sand in the pockets or its stakes.

Grass. Snowys and BCF say the CGear weave lets grass breathe and lets water drain, and Snowys says the Companion weave is breathable. A waterproof picnic blanket can mark a lawn if it sits all week. Follow the park’s rules.

Cheap cotton is separate. Amazon AU listed a MOMOMUS sand-free beach blanket, 210 x 230 cm, cotton and viscose, at A$21.99, with a typical price of A$27.99 on the same page. The listing calls it a light sheet, not a thick towel, and reviews do not all agree. One says the weave is too open to stop sand.

FAQ

What does sand-free mean here?

On BCF’s CGear mats, sand is supposed to fall through and stay underneath. On the Bok blanket, Anaconda means grains shake off a waffle microfibre. The Companion page never says sand-free.

Is the Companion a beach mat?

No. It is an annex and awning floor, 2.4 m wide by 4, 5 or 6 m. Snowys mentions beachside setups, which fits a caravan on sand, not a walk to the swimming beach.

Which mat suits a caravan awning?

A 2.4 m-wide CGear Multimat or the Companion, after you measure. The Companion includes pegs. Snowys says the C-Gear does not. Only BCF uses the sand-free name for this mat.

What helps on a windy beach?

Weight the Quicksand, because no pegs are listed. At camp, use the CGear D-rings or the Companion pegs, and pack the mat up if it starts to lift.
