Top Tips for Camping in the Summer
Whether you are beach camping or bush camping, summer is one of the most popular times to go camping for many campers and their families. However, summer can bring with it soaring temperatures, scorching heat and dry wind, which can become unbearable for some campers, especially those who are camping in the heart of the bush with no creek or beach in sight to cool down with a swim or a drink of water.
If you are going camping in the summer, you must always be ready for all types of weather the Australian outback may throw at you. At the end of the day, you never know what harsh elements the open road or bush will bring, so it’s important to do your research and be prepared with first aid kids, water, food and protective clothing every step of the way on your trip.
Here are our top tips for beating the heat this summer camping trip:
Set up your camp near a water source – During the summer heat, especially in the bush, it’s important to keep up your water intake. So, invest in a water carrier. Also, by setting up your camp near a freshwater creek or river, you will be able to access fresh water and have a swim if the heat becomes too much for you. Before you take off on your trip, do some research on the local freshwater creeks available in the area where you’re be camping or stopping off in. Plus, the breeze coming off the water will cool you down.
Check the weather forecast – Research where you will be going and check the weather forecast during your trip. Will there be rain, storms or soaring temperature? Although the weather can change, it’s essential to be as prepared as you can be.
Wear UV protective clothing – The sun’s rays can be extremely harmful, especially in a hot place like Australia. Wearing long-sleeved UV protective clothing, sunscreen and a hat will help keep you protected from the sun and the heat during your trip.
First Aid Kit – Safety first! Make sure you take a safety kit, along with some insect repellent and lip balm.
Test your camping gear – Make sure you have everything you need when it comes to camping gear like torches, matches, lighters, a tent, sleeping bags, food, toiletries, rope, a pocket knife, a hammer and nails and kitchen essentials. Put together a list of everything you need. If you’re an experienced camper, make sure you update your gear and ensure it’s in top condition.
